ഫാബേസീ സസ്യകുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ചെറുമരമാണ്‌ അകത്തി. സംസ്കൃതത്തിൽ അഗസ്തി अगस्ति, അഗസ്തിക, മുനിദ്രുമം, വംഗസേന എന്നീ പേരുകളിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ^[3] മധ്യകേരളത്തിൽ "അഗസ്ത്യാർ മുരിങ്ങ" എന്നും തമിഴിൽ அகத்தி (അകത്തി) എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. 6 മീറ്റർ മുതൽ 8 വരെ മീറ്റർ ഉയരത്തിൽ വരെ ഈ സസ്യം വളരുന്നുഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ സാധാരണയായി കണ്ടുവരുന്ന ഈ ചെടിയുടെ ജന്മദേശം ഇന്ത്യയോ തെക്കുകിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യയോ ആണെന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.^[4] ആപേക്ഷിക ആർദ്രതയും ചൂടും കൂടുതലുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ്‌ ഇത് പൊതുവേ വളരുന്നത്‌. തെക്കുകിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യയിലെ ചില പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ അകത്തിയുടെ പൂവ്, ഫലം, ഇല എന്നിവ ആഹാരമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. സ്വതന്ത്ര വിജ്ഞാനകോശം.
